CanOpener — for Headphones App Reviews

Unhappy...

I purchased this on my IPhone to listen to my ITunes library. Imagine my surprise when I cant use the app on most of my iTunes library because it wont play DRM tracks.

Wow!

Visuals/responsiveness are pretty slow on my iPhone 4, but thats understandable since its a pretty resource-intensive app on a resource-lacking device. I wont dock any stars for that because everything else makes up for that. I unlocked every in-app purchase, and while it was a bit pricey, it was so worth the money! This makes my $40 SOL Republic JAX sound like my $100 Shure SE215s, and my $100 215s sound like headphones over twice as expensive! The sound quality is unparalleled against anything thats not an uncompressed player, and the EQs and Crossfeed are amazing! I would recommend 10/10.

Good, hope it gets better

I purchased all the in-app purchases and am happy with the sound. A few comments: 1.) The app looks nice but has no landscape mode, which would be nice for the pencil eq 2.) When you purchase the pencil eq, the equalizer option should go away as its just taking up space afterwards. 3.) Although this is probably an Apple issue, there is no way to rate your songs within the app. I like being able to rate my songs, and if I need to rate something then I have to leave the app and open Apples music app, which shuts down the song Im listening to in can opener. its annoying. I have a large catalog and am slowly rating songs. 4.) No on-the-fly playlist so I can just add songs I want to listen to, without creating a separate play list. 5.) Im a visual person, and although theyve done a good job making everything visually appealing, theres no graphic interface for choosing music from your library. At least in Apples music app you can rotate sideways and see album covers. All you get in Can Opener is a tiny icon next to text about the music (i.e. artist, song name, album, etc). This goes hand-in-hand with my 4. above. If you set up all of your playlists in Itunes and never do so on your phone, then you wont have a problem with it. Overall Im satisfied with the app. They did a very good job with the acoustic aspect, but its clear the interface was done by engineers who arent very visually minded, or usability. I do think its a bit pricey given the issues Ive identified, but at least I can count on the sound being better than Apples music app.

Is it on?

No way to tell if its always turned on, or just turned on when the app is open.

Absolutely Incredible!

This app is exactly what Ive been looking for in a music player! I seriously cant say enough about the sound quality here...it just adds a whole other dimension to your music that you didnt realize you were missing! Dont overthink it: buy this app, you wont regret it!

Spent some time with it, really love it

Bottom line: this is a great app that sounds better and more faithful to the original recording than Apples music app, even without using the additional processing. The additional processing (cross feed, eq) is a bonus and with it applied judiciously you can create a pretty solid audiophile experience on an iOS device. Got a new pair of Onkyo headphones (which I really like) that sounded too harsh in the upper-midrange in Apples music app. I tried Can Opener and it immediately (even without any processing applied) provided a less harsh, more contoured, more faithful reproduction. I bought the Hi-Fi Pack to try out their sample rate conversion for my higher sample rate Apple Lossless format files. Sounds good. Not a dramatic difference but smoother, seems to add a bit of detail, though it is not necessary to get a great sound. Other nice touch is a more fine-tuned volume control, and I love the dosimeter. Cross feed is very well done, but I prefer a subtle setting. Fortunately, Can Opener gives you complete control over the amount and angle of the cross feed. Great app. Thanks.

Nice Sound When it Works; Terrible Interface

The description says it works with iOS 6.0 and later, but it will not open on my older iPod Touch with iOS 6.1.6. On my newer iPod Touch, with iOS 8.3, it will open but sometimes crashes. The user interface for selecting crossfeed and EQ options is fine, but the setup for playing music, fast forwarding, adjusting volume, and the like is just ridiculous; its awkward and counterintuitive, and its very easy to accidentally stop the song youre listening to or jump ahead or backward within it. (Instead of a horizontal progress bar, theres a big stupid circle in the middle of your screen; its far too easy to touch it by mistake, whether youre trying to access another function or just holding the device.) Its a shame, because when I can get it to work, the crossfeed and EQ functions really do make it possible to get much more satisfying sound from the various headphones, earphones, and earbuds Ive used with it.

By far the best application Ive bought.

Being a music lover and possessing pretty decent headphones (Beyerdynamic DT 880s), I saw all the good reviews of this app and though Id check it out, though I was a bit skeptical. Now that Ive spent some time with it, Im truly amazed! I run the speaker angle maxed with the amount set to 75%, so its subtle yet makes a huge difference in the listening experience. It sounds as though the gap between the left and right drivers is filled, providing better spacing and better (not "more") bass. I dont mess with the EQ that much since my headphones are already pretty flat, but it seems very decent. The UI is simple and well-animated. Its nearly perfect. My only request is for an option to have a traditional left-to-right scrubbing bar, as the circular one does get on my nerves at times. This is a must-have for audiophiles, period. You wont be disappointed in your purchase. UPDATE: Id like to see proper scaling for the iPhone 6. It doesnt look bad; the UI just looks a bit too large and a tiny bit pixelated at the moment.

Where are the updates??

Is there a trend with audio players not updating this last and this year??? The only player I know thats been updated was Flac Player+ and that was back in May... Come on guys, we expect consistency on the products we gladly paid for!

Use it exclusively

This app really gets your music to another level if you set it up right. I dont even use the standard music app anymore this has replaced it, and I often test the two apps out every now and than and this app sure comes out on top.

Waste of money

I was hoping to enhance the sound of my music but what came out of my earbuds was NOTHING! I recently bought some RHA T10I earbuds. Apparently they are not on the list of headphones on Can Opener. Everyone should make sure your headphones are on the list before you buy this app otherwise your eating your money. What a RIP!

Overall great app

Sound is much improved over stock Music app. Nice interface. I like that i can save settings for different headphones. Its my go-to for all music.

The best EQ app!!!!

Makes my headphones sound incredible. This app blows away any of the other EQ apps currently available.

Awesome!!

I have etymotic er4ps and this makes a good thing sound even better. Awesome!!

Great sound no longer working

I really love this app. The interface is fantastic and the sound is great but with ios9.1 and on my new iPhone 6s Plus it no longer plays back audio. I have reached out to the developer and never heard anything back.

Really Amazing App

Unique Design With Extensive Tone Shaping Capabilities! Audiophile standards can be easily and effectively attained utilizing the diverse and intuitively designed features. Most Highly Recommended!

Superb value.

A great sounding application. Headphone listening fatigue is reduced. Equalizer functions are excellent. The interface takes a little learning curve but not difficult. Use the numerical settings.

Great sound but multiple crashes

I love the app when it works. Recently its been crashing pretty regularly with iOS 9.2 on an old iPad 2.

Abandonware

The app hasnt been updated since December 2014. It no longer plays audio on my 6s, so its useless anymore. Interface is still strange to get used to even after using it for years. On top of that its fuzzy on my screen because it isnt ready for bigger screens (because it hasnt been updated in over a year) All of the 5 star ratings are from a long time ago and havent been updated to represent its current state. I blew about $14 on an app that is no longer supported and doesnt work. Avoid it.

Stoners Beware

This is fabulous. Conjures a cross between headphones & speakers, almost like sitting in just the right spot while appropriately intoxicated. I havent smoked in years, but i still love spacey music such as flaming lips, radiohead, bjork, failure, Hendrix, et al. This ap is perfect for me! A great buy. PS: the new Bowie album is uber intense with this app and some good overear phones.
